内容記述 This study focuses on the use of emerging technologies such as smart speakers and smartphone applications in the improvement of English language skills of Japanese students, how students feel about virtual reality (VR), and how VR might be utilized by Japanese higher education to improve English in the future. An empirical investigation was carried out from April 2019 to January 2020, targeting 82 undergraduates majoring in economics. Participants were required to study their favorite English language programs using AI speakers for eight months, along with writing in a diary and videotaping their thoughts using a smartphone. The results showed that students who used AI speakers during the eight-month training period performed better on TOEIC than non-users, who instead used online materials outside of the classroom. The results suggest integrating blended learning along with 21st-century skills, including AI, VR, and PeerEval, may be an effective means by which to improve the English proficiency of native Japanese students. Furthermore, from the first semester of 2020, all courses were taught online with a ZOOM. About 30% of students enrolled in all classes were satisfied with virtual online learning; however, 30% of students were unsatisfied with virtual online learning. The second semester we carried out the experiment to promote the virtual exchange program with the National University of Singapore (NUS) for eight weeks. How the students learned under COVID-19 will be explained more in detail.
