内容記述 This study examines Hiromichi Ugaya's Portrait of Fukushima 2011-2015: Life After Meltdown. Though Ugaya's book is ostensibly a work of photojournalism, here it is argued that the human-to-nature interplay and the poetic finesse of the captions that accompany the images place it squarely in the realm of nature writing. Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry and Henry David Thoreau are discussed in relation to Portrait of Fukushima. Ugaya's work is an atypical example of nature writing in that he does not initially set out to position himself in dialogue with natural forces, but rather is driven into the situation by an urge to document the destruction of the March 2011 triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown) and the impact it has had on the survivors. This study argues that through the process Ugaya puts himself in league with Thoreau and others as an author able to profoundly portray humankind's precarious relationship with nature.
