内容記述 Economic geography suggests that road networks that lower transportation cost encourage land use change, agglomeration and dispersal as economic activities over space get reorganized. Currently the main artery of overland trade between Myanmar and China, once known as “Burma road" linking Shan State of Myanmar with the Yunnan Province of China, is being upgraded with improved road conditions and gas and oil pipelines linking Yunnan with Indian Ocean through a port in Rakhine State. The authors argue that despite historically intertwined vested interests in the unruly segments of Myanmar, forces of economic integration along the emerging economic corridor could work toward institutional changes facilitating workable compromise among stakeholders if they are given a shared picture of benefit-cost distribution to work with and negotiate over. Exploratory inferences from ongoing investigation on agricultural trade including live cattle are provided.
