内容記述
Comparative cultural studies of physical contact suggest that in Japan, intimate physical contact between parents and children occurs frequently when children are young, but declines after a certain age. However, there is no consensus on the age at which physical contact begins to decline. In this study, we examined the quantitative changes in skin-to-skin contact between mothers and their children (16 types of physical contact behavior), with a comparison between Japan and Italy. The results showed that the pattern of decrease in frequency varied by behavior. In contrast to Italian mothers and their children who maintain physical contact such as kissing, hugging and linking arms, Japanese mothers and their children rarely engage in physical contact once their children reach high school age or older. In the future, we need to explore the culture-specific ideas about skinship, child development, and parent-child relationships that underlie changes in the frequency of behaviors.
