本稿は、1840年代のアメリカ合衆国の主要な禁酒運動結社の一つである「禁酒の息子たち」とその派生団体「禁酒の娘たち」が、結社の結成・運営という面で、どのような機会と経験を女性にもたらしたのかを明らかにする。禁酒の息子たち(SoT)は、先行するワシントニアン運動の衰退の原因が緩い組織形態にあると判断し、強固な組織を作ることで絶対禁酒の実践を支えることを目指した。具体的には、秘密結社や相互扶助組織の要素を採用して会員間の絆を醸成し、相互の監視と励ましにより、飲酒の誘惑を退けようとした。また、下位組織が州組織・全国組織に代表制によってつながるネットワークを形成し、活動の一貫性を確保しようとした。ワシントニアン運動は、慈善活動の要素を含んでいたため、女性の参加と活動が不可欠だったが、SoTは閉鎖的な環境での男性会員間の絆の強化を重視したため、女性はSoTに会員として加わることはできなかった。そのため、SoTの運動方針に賛同する女性たちは、禁酒の娘たち(DoT)という別組織を結成した。DoTは男性組織に倣った組織形成・運営を行うことで、地域を越えた結社のネットワークを形成し、大規模な相互扶助基金の運営に携わるなど、女性たちが組織化の能力を身につける場になった。しかし、男性の禁酒運動家は、女性の組織化に政治化の兆候を見出し、警戒を強めた。また、SoTは運動手段として法的規制を支持したことで、選挙権を持たない女性会員との溝を深めた。

This article examines the organizational opportunities that the Sons and Daughters of Temperance, one of the major temperance societies in the 1840s, provided to women in terms of forming and operating voluntary associations. The Sons of Temperance aimed to support the practice of teetotalism by creating a strong organization. Specifically, they employed elements of secret societies and mutual aid organizations to resist the temptation to drink through mutual monitoring and encouragement. They also sought to ensure the consistency of activities by closely monitoring subordinate divisions. The preceding Washingtonian temperance movement included elements of charity; thus, women's participation was essential. Conversely, the Sons emphasized strengthening bonds between male members in a closed environment. Therefore, those women who adhered to the Sons' principles formed a separate organization called the Daughters of Temperance. By operating an organization modeled after the Sons', the Daughters helped women acquire organizational skills, such as forming a transregional network of associations and managing mutual-aid funds. However, male temperance activists became alarmed as they saw the increasing organization of women as a sign of their politicization. Furthermore, the Sons' increasing reliance on legal strategies deepened the rift with female members, who lacked the right to vote.
