内容記述 This paper delves into John Milton's incisive critique against rhetorical sophistry through the metaphorical delineation of Eden as well as celestial rebellion in Paradise Lost, focusing on Satan's manipulative nature in employment of Aristotelian rhetoric strategies to subvert truth and deceive, which was rampant during the mid-seventeenth century for the narrator of Paradise Lost can be regarded as an orator, with the rhetoric of oration applied to his narrative. Milton thus strategically differentiates his use of rhetoric in depicting Eden, the fallen angels, and the Son. Moreover, Leveraging Aristotle's Ars Rhetorica (Ῥητορική), the analysis explores how Satan exploits ethos and pathos to ensnare the heavenly host, revealing the inherent dangers of oratory that exploit emotional vulnerability. The contrast between Satan's not only grandiloquent but also duplicitous oratory exemplified by Ciceronian style, and Milton's ideal of earnest, unadorned discourse illuminates the moral and intellectual stakes involved. The orations of the archfiend are dissected for their rhetorical opulence and psychological subterfuge, emphasizing the perilous nature of persuasive tactics detached from veracity. By employing rhythmic cadence and emotive resonance, Devilish King's speech serves as a paradigmatic example of how eloquent manipulation can undermine genuine discourse. In counterpoint, the study scrutinizes the stark contrast between Satan's fallacious rhetoric and the authentic, divine eloquence epitomized by Christ's chariot in Paradise Lost. The depiction of Son's chariot, characterized by intrinsic, self-sustaining luminosity, represents an ideal of rhetoric imbued with alētheia, or truth and rationality, untainted by pretentiously deceitful embellishments. Milton's anti-aureate portrayal thus plays a profoundly admonitive role against excessive rhetorical amplification and emotional exploitation, championing “unfeigned" oration founded on integrity and intellectual clarity.
